I think that it is better to play well and lose because then you know that you have tried your best and you have not cheated. Whereas if you was to play badly and win it will basically just be out of luck and cheating. Also I guess it also depends on what you win. Most people may think that they would rather win by your own achievement than someones downfall. If you win by playing badly, the guilt may also be hanging over you.
